The distinction matters most when using or transferring an asset. A wallet or exchange may support the cryptocurrency but not every blockchain network on which it exists.

What Is a Crypto Coin?
In crypto, a coin is a digital asset built directly into a blockchain. Bitcoin uses BTC, Ethereum uses ETH, and Solana uses SOL.
The blockchain protocol determines how transactions are processed, how consensus works, how fees are paid and how new units of the asset enter circulation. Because the coin is part of the network itself, it can also play a direct role in fees, incentives and consensus.
Bitcoin is a clear example: the protocol determines BTC issuance, transaction rules and the maximum supply of 21 million coins.

How Are Crypto Coins Created?
Coin issuance follows the blockchain’s consensus and monetary rules. Bitcoin uses Proof-of-Work (PoW), where miners compete to produce valid blocks and receive BTC rewards together with transaction fees.
Proof-of-Stake (PoS) networks use validators instead. Ethereum, for example, has used Proof-of-Stake since 2022, with validators proposing and attesting to blocks.

Coins Are Built Into Network Economics
A blockchain can use its coin for transaction fees, validator or miner incentives and other protocol-level functions. If the chain splits into a separate network, the new chain can also have its own coin. Bitcoin Cash, for example, has BCH as its native asset following the 2017 fork from Bitcoin.
Crypto Coins Can Act as Money and Network Assets
Coins often serve several roles at once. ETH pays for Ethereum transactions and smart-contract execution and is also used in staking. BTC is used to transfer and hold value while underpinning Bitcoin’s miner incentive system.
Depending on the network, coins may be used for:
- transaction fees;
- payments and transfers;
- staking or network security;
- collateral;
- holding value.
Coin Supply Follows Protocol Rules
The network determines how its coin supply changes. Bitcoin issues BTC through mining, while Ethereum issues ETH to validators and burns the base-fee portion of transactions.
These rules can differ substantially between blockchains, so “coin” does not imply a particular supply model.
Coins Depend on Their Network’s Consensus and Security
A coin carries the security model of its blockchain. Bitcoin relies on Proof-of-Work, while Ethereum and Solana use Proof-of-Stake-based systems.
Being a coin also does not automatically make an asset more decentralized than a token. Validator or miner concentration, governance and network architecture still determine how control is distributed.
Supply Rules and Scarcity
Bitcoin has a hard maximum supply of 21 million BTC. Dogecoin has no fixed maximum supply, while Ethereum has no Bitcoin-style hard cap.
Scarcity can affect supply economics, but demand, liquidity and network usage also influence how the market values an asset.

Most coin use cases come directly from the blockchain they support:
- moving or holding value;
- paying network fees;
- staking or securing the network;
- serving as collateral.

Types of Crypto Coins
Rather than strict functional categories, coins can be grouped by how their networks originated.
Native network coins are the primary assets built into their blockchains. BTC, ETH and SOL are examples.
Fork-derived coins emerge when a blockchain separates into independent networks. Bitcoin Cash is one example.
Wrapped assets and stablecoins are often placed in coin lists, but they usually belong on the token side of the distinction.
WBTC and WETH are therefore tokens even though they represent assets that originated as coins. USDT and USDC are also generally issued as tokens on existing networks rather than acting as the native coin of one dedicated blockchain.

What Is a Crypto Token?
A crypto token is a digital asset issued on an existing blockchain rather than through an independent blockchain of its own.
Its purpose can vary widely. Tokens can represent stable-value assets, governance rights, access to services, ownership claims or another cryptocurrency.
At the consensus layer, tokens rely on their host blockchain. On many networks, their own rules are implemented through smart contracts or native token programs.
USDT shows why the network still matters. An ERC-20 USDT transfer follows Ethereum’s rules and uses ETH for gas, while USDT issued on TRON follows that network’s transaction system.

How Are Crypto Tokens Created?
Launching a token on an established blockchain is usually less complex than building a new blockchain. Developers can use standards such as ERC-20 on Ethereum rather than creating a separate consensus network.
The token’s code can define its name, symbol, supply, minting permissions, transfer rules and other functions. Some projects issue the full supply at launch, while others allow additional tokens to enter circulation under predefined rules.
Deploying a production token still requires careful contract design and testing. Unsafe minting functions, admin permissions or code errors can create serious security problems.

What Are the Features of Crypto Tokens?
Token design can be tailored to the application that issues it.
In decentralized finance, tokens represent governance rights, collateral, deposits or claims on other assets. Stablecoins bring fiat-denominated value onto blockchain networks, while tokenized real-world assets can represent claims linked to securities, funds or commodities.
Tokens also appear throughout decentralized applications and digital ownership systems, with NFTs covering individually identifiable assets rather than interchangeable units.
What Are Crypto Tokens Used For?
By 2026, tokens are used across DeFi, stablecoin payments, governance, staking systems, tokenized assets and blockchain applications.
Fundraising is another use. Initial coin offerings became one of the earliest high-profile token distribution models, although token sales can fall under securities, crypto-asset or other financial rules depending on their structure and jurisdiction.

Types of Crypto Tokens
Token categories can overlap. A governance token may also have utility inside an application, while a tokenized financial asset may carry several rights at once.
Utility tokens perform functions inside a product or protocol, while governance tokens can give holders voting rights over specified protocol decisions.
Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC target a reference value, commonly the U.S. dollar. Their risks depend on factors such as issuer structure, reserves, redemption and network support.
Security tokens and tokenized assets can represent shares, debt, fund interests or other financial claims. Their legal treatment follows the rights and structure of the asset rather than the word “token.”
NFTs represent individually identifiable assets, while wrapped and staking tokens represent different underlying positions. WBTC represents Bitcoin on another network, whereas stETH represents ETH deposited through Lido’s staking system.
Coins vs. Tokens – What’s the Difference?
#1 Different Underlying Architecture
- A coin is built into its own blockchain.
- A token is issued on an existing blockchain through a token standard, smart contract or network program.
WBTC is a useful edge case: it represents Bitcoin, but WBTC itself is a token because it exists through infrastructure on another blockchain rather than the Bitcoin protocol.
#2 Different Utility
Coins usually sit at the economic center of their networks. They may pay transaction fees, reward validators or miners, secure the blockchain and transfer value.
ETH, for example, pays for Ethereum transactions and can be staked as part of network validation.
Tokens serve functions defined by the application or issuer. UNI, for example, is an Ethereum-based governance token associated with the Uniswap protocol rather than the asset of an independent UNI blockchain.
#3 Different Fee System
Both coin and token transfers can incur network fees. The difference is which asset is used to pay them.
A wallet can therefore hold USDT on Ethereum but still be unable to send it without enough ETH to pay the gas fee.
#4 Different Security Dependencies
A coin depends on the consensus security of its blockchain. A smaller Proof-of-Work chain, for example, may be more exposed to a majority attack if one party gains enough hash power to disrupt consensus.
A token relies on the host blockchain for consensus but can introduce additional risks through its own code and infrastructure. Vulnerable smart contracts, admin permissions, bridges or oracles can fail even when the underlying blockchain continues to operate normally.
A coin carries the security model of its blockchain; a token relies on that blockchain plus the additional code and systems around the token.
Coins and Tokens – Which Is Better to Develop or Invest In?
For Developers
A coin makes sense when a project needs its own consensus mechanism, fee market or network rules. That freedom also means maintaining the blockchain’s validators or miners, nodes, software and security.
A token is usually easier to launch because it uses an established network, but the project also inherits that network’s fees, performance and technical constraints.
For Investors
Whether an asset is technically a coin or token tells you little about its investment quality. Supply, demand, liquidity, security and actual usage are more relevant.

Volatility also depends on the individual asset, liquidity and market structure, not on whether it is classified as a coin or token.
- BTC is a coin because Bitcoin is its underlying blockchain; USDT on Ethereum is a token because Ethereum processes the transfer.
