Bitcoin Rallied – Trump’s Crypto Bets Went the Other Way

Bitcoin and the Trump-branded tokens parted ways after Democrats swept Congress, with BTC climbing 5.2% in a day to $80,572 while the TRUMP meme coin dropped 16%.

Key Takeaways

  • Bitcoin gained 5.2% while TRUMP lost 16%.
  • Democrats gain subpoena power from January 3.
  • Trump’s veto limits laws, not investigations.
  • WLFI holders get votes, not revenue rights.

Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate in the November 3 midterm vote, according to The Associated Press, ending two years of Republican control of Congress.

Over 24 hours, Bitcoin’s gain and TRUMP’s loss ended up about 21 percentage points apart. Ethereum, BNB and XRP rose over the same window, so the selling in TRUMP and WLFI ran against the wider market instead of following it. The weekly column shows the vote deepened a slide that was already under way. Comparing the two windows, TRUMP had lost roughly 10% in the six days before the latest session and WLFI about 5%. Bitcoin had also slipped about 4% in that stretch, then won all of it back and more in a single day. BNB’s daily gain still left it down on the week. The recovery followed an overnight dip as early results arrived, a move we tracked in our coverage of Bitcoin through the midterm count.

The Daily Charts Show How Deep the Damage Runs

One session can exaggerate a move. The distance between price and the 50-day simple moving average, a standard gauge of medium-term trend, gives a steadier comparison across the three assets.

Bitcoin sits just under its 50-day line and stays above its 100-day and 200-day averages, near $77,042 and $73,265. Its relative strength index (RSI), which measures the speed of recent moves on a 0-100 scale, is at a neutral midpoint. TRUMP and WLFI trade below all three averages, with their 200-day lines near $1.924 and $0.0586. Both RSI readings have dropped under 30, the zone traders associate with heavy, one-sided selling. On its own, that reading carries no timing signal.

What a Democratic Congress Changes for Trump’s Ventures

The vote moves expectations first and committee control later. Democrats take the gavels only when the new Congress is sworn in, yet the balance of power for the next two years was settled once the races were called. Legislation is the weaker lever. Trump keeps his veto, and overriding it takes two-thirds of both chambers, as Fortune noted after the House was called. A bill aimed at presidential crypto holdings would run into that barrier. Oversight is the stronger one.

Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, told Punchbowl News the panel would look into the family’s crypto deals, according to the same Fortune report. In the Senate, Elizabeth Warren, the ranking Democrat on the Banking Committee, has pressed regulators about World Liberty for more than a year, and Bloomberg Law reported in August that Democrats were set to give oversight a larger role in crypto policy if they won.

For the wider industry, the result is a policy setback. Reuters reported that crypto’s roughly $200 million election push stumbled, with its heaviest loss in Ohio, where Sherrod Brown won his Senate comeback despite more than $60 million in crypto PAC spending against him.

The industry’s market-structure bill, the Clarity Act, had already stalled after Democrats blocked it in a September Senate vote. The difference in exposure offers the clearest explanation for the price split. A slower path for crypto legislation touches every token, Bitcoin included. Hearings and subpoenas target specific businesses, and TRUMP and WLFI are the two tokens most closely tied to the president’s family. Price data cannot reveal each seller’s motive, and TRUMP’s supply also runs on its own clock.

TRUMP: A Meme Coin With an Insider Supply Schedule

According to the official TRUMP site, CIC Digital LLC, an affiliate of The Trump Organization, and Fight Fight Fight LLC together own 80% of the token supply, released over three years. CIC Digital and Celebration Cards LLC, which owns Fight Fight Fight, also collect revenue from trading activity. That supply unlocks daily.

In a July update, the project said about two-thirds of the total had already unlocked and that less than 9.6% of supply, taken from released tokens, could be sold, distributed or used for ecosystem projects in the following months while Coin Club events continued.

The Coin Club rewards the opposite behavior. It ranks wallets by how much TRUMP they hold and for how long, and a leaderboard for a gala dinner in Washington is running this month. The site itself warns that the winter leaderboard may add to price swings. Holders are rewarded with event access for accumulating during the same period the project flagged for sales from its own inventory.

WLFI: Votes for Holders, Revenue Claims for the Family

World Liberty Financial describes WLFI as a governance token. Holders can vote on upgrades, partnerships and the use of funds, and those who lock tokens for at least 180 days can earn variable rewards in the project’s USD1 stablecoin, provided they keep casting votes. The project’s economics were set up differently.

Reuters reported in March 2025 that DT Marks DEFI LLC, a Trump-affiliated company, owned about 60% of the holding company that controls World Liberty, and that the family had a claim on 75% of net revenue from token sales. For a public holder, the token price is the main financial exposure, with staking rewards on top. The revenue claims Reuters described sit with the Trump-linked entity, outside the tokens trading on exchanges.

Who Carries the Loss When Trump’s Tokens Fall

The price table tracks tokens, not the family’s returns. A Reuters investigation in June estimated that Trump and his sons made at least $2.3 billion from four crypto ventures, including TRUMP and World Liberty, while more than a million investors were sitting on net losses of about $2.3 billion at the end of April.

Read against that finding, this week’s split carries a sharper meaning. Bitcoin rode a market-wide recovery. TRUMP and WLFI fell on buyers holding assets whose appeal rests on a political brand that House Democrats have promised to investigate. The next checkpoints are already scheduled.
