Hong Kong’s 24/7 RWA Market Has a Weekend Problem

ChinaAMC’s Hong Kong dollar and US dollar tokenized money market funds can now trade around the clock on PantherTrade, but the weekend hours they add are their least anchored.
Key Takeaways
- Weekend trades lack a redemption anchor to NAV
- Buyers hold a claim on PantherTrade, not shares
- Orders outside a ±4% price band are rejected
- Bank withdrawals wait for business days
The Securities and Futures Commission said on October 26 that secondary trading had begun in the Class F tokenized shares of both funds, under rules it set out in an April 20 circular. Retail and professional investors who pass the platform’s onboarding checks can take part.
Why weekends are the weak spot
Until now, holders could only subscribe or redeem directly with the fund, at a net asset value (NAV) set once per dealing day. The new market lets them trade tokens with each other at whatever price buyer and seller agree. On a normal weekday the two prices stay close, because anyone who finds tokens trading well below NAV can buy them and redeem at full value.
That link breaks when dealing stops. ChinaAMC’s October 23 filing warns that prices may diverge further from NAV at weekends and other times when subscriptions and redemptions are closed but trading continues. It adds that far fewer participants, market makers included, may be active outside normal Hong Kong hours.
Market makers are meant to fill that gap, but ChinaAMC has committed only to use its “best endeavours” to keep at least one quoting. That is a legal promise to try, not to deliver. The SFC requires platforms to monitor market makers’ spreads and quote sizes, and to alert investors when prices stray significantly from the indicative NAV, or iNAV, a running estimate refreshed roughly every 15 seconds.
The guardrails in the filing
- PantherTrade rejects orders priced more than 4% away from the last matched price five minutes earlier.
- The iNAV pauses for five minutes nightly, around 23:45 Monday to Saturday and 23:30 on Sunday, and for up to an hour on some Saturdays for upgrades.
- Trading can be halted if the iNAV cannot be calculated reliably or market making is disrupted. Redemptions may continue during a halt.
Fees widen the gap. PantherTrade’s published fee schedule charges takers 0.29% on its lowest volume tier. For any money market fund yielding 3.5% a year or less, that single fee costs at least a month of income, before any discount to NAV.
What a buyer actually owns
Each Class F token represents one fund share, but the official register stays offchain. Tokens traded on PantherTrade sit in an omnibus wallet in the platform’s name, controlled by a token custodian, and PantherTrade remains the registered shareholder however often they change hands. Buyers hold a beneficial interest or entitlement against the platform. Investors who trade through a connecting broker add one more layer between themselves and the register.
That shapes the downside. The filing warns that if PantherTrade becomes insolvent, defaults or stops operating, recovering tokens held in its name may be limited, delayed or end up in legal proceedings. If the platform lost its SFC licence, holders might be unable to trade at all, with no assurance another platform would take over. It also means the fund register shows a single shareholder for all of PantherTrade’s customers combined, the same reason a wallet count can hide how many investors are behind it.
PantherTrade’s listing notice rules out token deposits and withdrawals for the CAMFF-HKD and CUMFU-USD pairs. Holders who bought through another distributor must transfer via the fund’s administrator, with requests due by the 11:00 a.m. Hong Kong dealing deadline and settled within one business day after it. The exchange-listed share classes, stock codes 3471 and 3472, trade separately on the stock exchange and cannot be converted into tokens.
From a weekend sale to cash in the bank
| Step | Timing | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Sell on PantherTrade | Any time the platform is open | Market price, minus trading fee |
| Cash lands in platform account | Generally within one hour | – |
| Withdraw to a bank | Within one business day in Hong Kong; one to three for international banks | – |
| Redeem with the fund instead | Dealing days, 11:00 a.m. Hong Kong cut-off | NAV |
A holder who sells on Saturday has platform cash within the hour, but PantherTrade’s withdrawal terms mean that money reaches a Hong Kong bank only once the working week starts. A holder who instead waits for Monday and redeems before the 11:00 a.m. cut-off is paid at NAV rather than a market price.
The weekend market earns its keep for someone who needs to move money within PantherTrade on a Sunday. For anyone who needs cash in a bank account, Monday’s redemption window will often reach the same place at a better price.
