El Salvador Partners With Nvidia to Build Homegrown AI Infrastructure

El Salvador is taking a bold step into artificial intelligence, teaming up with Nvidia in a move that signals the country’s growing ambition to lead in digital innovation.
Rather than rely on foreign-built systems, the government aims to build its own AI ecosystem tailored specifically to the country’s cultural and economic landscape.
The collaboration, announced by the National Bitcoin Office on April 21, is set to equip El Salvador with access to Nvidia’s advanced tools and expertise. The focus? Developing homegrown AI models that can help the country tackle challenges like improving education, managing natural disasters, and boosting productivity. From better weather prediction systems to more efficient public services, the initiative is designed to put AI to work in practical, everyday ways.
This move isn’t just about tech—it’s about people. Plans are already in motion to train developers, government staff, and researchers in the use of AI, ensuring that the country builds not just systems, but the skilled workforce to support them. The long-term vision is clear: create sustainable, sovereign AI infrastructure with Salvadoran talent at the center.
This isn’t El Salvador’s first AI push, either. Earlier this year, it rolled out a national educational initiative called CUBO_ai, aimed at university students. Backed by investor Cathie Wood, who’s slated to lead the program’s first lecture, the initiative aims to bring world-class AI training into the public education system.
While El Salvador’s Bitcoin strategy has faced headwinds—including pushback from the IMF over further crypto purchases—the government is doubling down on innovation. It continues its daily Bitcoin acquisition policy, even as it channels energy into AI as a parallel path to economic growth.
President Bukele’s administration seems intent on proving that emerging technologies aren’t just experimental tools—they’re central to building the country’s future.
