Trump Urges EU to Impose 100% Tariffs on China and India to Pressure Putin

President Donald Trump has pressed European leaders to adopt tariffs of up to 100% on Chinese and Indian goods, arguing that only sweeping economic measures can force Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.

The demand came during a high-level U.S.–EU meeting on Tuesday, according to officials familiar with the talks.

Trump, who has repeatedly vowed to secure a quick peace deal, has faced mounting challenges as Russian strikes on Ukraine intensify.

Over the weekend, Kyiv’s main government building was hit by a missile in one of the largest aerial offensives of the war, which involved more than 800 drones and 13 missiles. Dozens of civilians were also killed this week in Donbas during a Russian glide bomb attack.

Washington already imposed a 50% tariff package on India last month, partly in response to its oil trade with Moscow. Trump now wants Europe to mirror that pressure, shifting away from its traditional reliance on sanctions and toward punitive levies. Despite EU pledges to cut off Russian energy, around one-fifth of the bloc’s natural gas still comes from the country.

The push follows U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s warning that Russia’s economy remains resilient without stronger European backing. Trump also said he intends to speak with Putin in the coming days while continuing trade negotiations with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both leaders have expressed optimism that a deal can be reached, describing their countries as “close friends and natural partners.”

The tariff push highlights the White House’s twin strategy: escalate pressure on Russia while repairing trade ties with India. Yet despite repeated threats, Trump has so far held back from unleashing the full scale of sanctions against the Kremlin after last month’s Alaska summit ended without progress.
