Senate Passes Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ in Marathon Session

President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and spending package—dubbed the “Big, Beautiful Bill”—cleared a major hurdle on Monday as the Senate passed the legislation after a grueling vote-a-rama session, setting the stage for final negotiations in the House.
Nearly all Senate Republicans backed the bill, except for Sens. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), and Susan Collins (R-Maine). No Democrats supported the measure. The final vote required a tie-breaking decision from Vice President JD Vance, who cast the decisive vote in favor of the legislation.
The bill—President Trump’s signature economic initiative—promises sweeping tax cuts, enhanced military spending, and significant changes to Social Security taxation, including the elimination of taxes on tips, overtime, and senior benefits.
House Approval Still Uncertain
The legislation now returns to the House, where it faces fresh challenges. Members of the House Freedom Caucus have voiced concern over what they consider insufficient spending reductions, while moderate Republicans are pushing back against cuts to Medicaid.
Despite the internal divisions, GOP leaders are pressing ahead with plans to deliver the final bill to Trump by July 4. “We’re going to get this done,” said House Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.), adding that the latest Senate revisions bring “more balance” to the bill.
Pressure Builds Ahead of Independence Day Deadline
Republican senators acknowledged behind-the-scenes negotiations aimed at smoothing differences with House lawmakers. Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) noted that adjustments were made with the House in mind to avoid derailment in the final stretch.
Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) expressed confidence on Fox News that the bill would reach President Trump on time: “This bill is going to his desk, and it’s going to deliver results Americans will feel immediately.”
With the clock ticking, House Republicans are expected to reconvene swiftly to finalize the package and deliver a key legislative victory to Trump before the holiday deadline.
