Musk Under Fire: Senator Warren Pushes Bill to End His Federal Role

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has introduced a sweeping new ethics bill targeting billionaire Special Government Employees (SGEs), including Elon Musk, who she claims is abusing his federal role for personal and financial gain.
In a fiery post on X (formerly Twitter) on April 14, Warren accused Musk of acting like a “co-president” of the United States, alleging that the Tesla and SpaceX CEO earns approximately $8 million per day while holding influential roles within federal advisory agencies.
“Musk should not be acting as co-president of the U.S. and making millions while doing it,” Warren said. “My new bill would crack down on conflicts of interest for Elon Musk and all Special Government Employees.”
The bill, co-sponsored by Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.), seeks to curb influence from powerful executives who simultaneously hold sway in both public and private sectors. Specifically, the legislation would prohibit billionaires like Musk—whose companies receive significant federal contracts—from maintaining official or advisory roles within U.S. government agencies.
Unelected billionaire Elon Musk should not be acting as co-president of the United States and making $8 million a day from government contracts while he’s at it.

Billion-Dollar Companies, Billion-Dollar Concerns
Elon Musk, acting under the satirical title “D.O.G.E.” (Department of Government Efficiency lead), has worked with the federal government on various projects. His companies, Tesla and SpaceX, have secured billions in federal contracts over the past decade—ranging from energy subsidies to NASA and Department of Defense deals.
Critics argue that such involvement represents a serious conflict of interest, particularly when Musk’s companies stand to benefit directly from policy influence.
What the Bill Proposes
- Bar company executives worth over $1 billion from serving as SGEs in agencies where they or their companies hold federal contracts.
- Require public disclosure of SGE compensation and government affiliations.
- Establish independent oversight for all advisory positions influencing U.S. public policy.
Senator Warren claims this legislation is essential for restoring ethical boundaries between public service and private profit.
“This bill is about keeping billionaires like Musk from writing policy that serves their bottom line while sitting at the federal table,” she stated.
