Warren Buffet Quietly Builds Position in Overlooked Tech Stock

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway has quietly ramped up its presence in the tech sector with a bold investment that’s catching the attention of market analysts.

The conglomerate has taken a $74 million position in VeriSign (VRSN), a domain infrastructure company that, while often overlooked, plays a central role in the functioning of the internet.

Regulatory filings reveal that Berkshire acquired over 377,000 shares of VeriSign across six trading days leading up to December 24. This move reflects Buffett’s growing interest in stable, underappreciated tech plays—particularly those with predictable cash flows and competitive moats.

The recent investment brings Berkshire’s stake in VeriSign to roughly 13.2 million shares, making it the company’s largest shareholder with nearly 14% ownership.

VeriSign, known for managing the .com and .net domain registries and operating two of the internet’s root servers, has seen a notable rebound. Though it previously trailed the S&P 500, its stock has gained over 35% year-to-date, trading around $280 per share.

Buffett’s growing position in the firm suggests a broader strategic tilt in Berkshire’s portfolio. While he’s traditionally cautious with tech stocks, his backing of VeriSign aligns with his preference for companies with durable business models and strong fundamentals.

Analysts have started to take notice. Citigroup recently issued a $238 price target for the stock, signaling confidence in its 2025 performance. Despite being below current trading levels, the projection supports the idea that the stock remains a solid long-term hold.

With Berkshire’s cash pile exceeding $300 billion, each allocation reflects a deliberate bet on sustainability and value. This latest move into internet infrastructure reinforces Buffett’s reputation for spotting overlooked winners hiding in plain sight.
