Wall Street Panic? Fund Managers Sound Alarm on ‘Overpriced’ US Stocks

A growing chorus of institutional investors is sounding the alarm on US equities, with sentiment now hitting its most bearish level in over two decades.

According to a recent Bank of America survey, 91% of fund managers believe US stocks are trading above fair value – the highest reading since 2001.

The findings suggest that the relentless rally in American shares may be testing investor patience.

BofA strategist Michael Hartnett cautioned that optimism in the market could morph into a full-fledged bubble, noting that cash positions have dropped to 3.9% of total assets. Historically, such low cash allocations have preceded sharp pullbacks.

At the same time, global positioning appears to be shifting. The poll revealed that allocations to overseas equities have climbed to their highest levels since February, with investors increasingly eyeing opportunities outside the US.

Emerging market assets, in particular, are gaining attention – nearly half of respondents view EM stocks as undervalued, the most favorable reading since early 2024.

When asked about the most crowded trades, respondents pointed to heavy bets on the so-called “Magnificent 7” tech giants, along with shorts on the US dollar and long positions in gold.

Looking ahead, investors identified several potential flashpoints that could derail markets. Among the top concerns were the risk of a trade war-driven recession, persistent inflation blocking Federal Reserve rate cuts, a disorderly surge in bond yields, the formation of an artificial intelligence stock bubble, and fears of dollar debasement.
