Viber is the latest big communications app that’s ready to hop aboard the crypto bandwagon, following the engagements of other big names such as Kik, Line, and Telegram.

The company has recently announced plans of adding support for a native token which will be developed and launched by Viber’s parent company, the “Japanese Amazon” – Rakuten.

Viber, the latest chat apps to join the crypto sphere

“Our mother company is creating Rakuten Coin: cryptocurrency, which is supported by the entire Rakuten ecosystem,” Djamel Agaoua, Viber Chief Executive Office declared according to Tass, a Russian news agency. He further noted that “This Rakuten Coin will be tradeable in Viber, and the token will appear in the Viber wallet.”

“Very soon you’ll be able to send some Rakuten Coins and to trade Rakuten Coins against rubles, dollars, and euros,” he added. Rakuten Coin is reportedly studying Russian laws in preparation for its token launch via Viber. The launch is scheduled to take place in Russia in 2019, even though no official date has been announced so far. If you’re wondering why Russia, the answer is quite straightforward: it’s one of the most crypto-friendly nations to date, and Viber currently has 45 million users in Russia alone.

Other communication apps with similar interests

There seems to be an ever-increasing interest in messaging applications that use cryptocurrencies. The trend was arguably launched by the Kik Messenger, that managed to raise nearly $100 million from more than 10,000 ICO investors in 117 countries. Kik Messenger currently has over 300 million registered users.

Earlier this year, Telegram managed to raise an impressive $1,7 billion. The campaign was so successful that the company didn’t go forward with its scheduled ICO. Not too long ago, Line, Japan’s most popular communications application with 200 million users, announced that it would be launching its own cryptocurrency exchange called Bitbox.

The exchange is expected to have low trading fees and to come with support for some of the most popular cryptocurrencies out there. Bitbox is reported to feature support for 15 languages and should be available on almost all countries worldwide.
