The incident took place on 1st May 2018, near 20:13 UTC. Hackers posted from the Vertcoin account a Bitcoin giveaway. All that users had to do was send 0.005 BTC to a specified address. The prize consisted of 10 BTC.
The spam post wasn’t really easy to identify by users because the profile has a “blue check“, which means that Vertcoin account has been checked by Twitter.
James Lovejoy, the Lead Developer at Vertcoin, identified the issue as quickly as he could, notifying users that the cryptocurrency giveaway might be a scam. He immediately contacted the Twitter Support in order to resolve the situation as soon as possible.
In addition to this incident, a representative of Discord server has advised users to “not believe or share anything you see posted there until confirmed here that we have regained control.”
At the time of writing, the post has not yet been removed from the Vertcoin profile. According to data, fortunately, no transaction was registered at the address mentioned in the post.
This is not the first such incident, that’s why you should be cautious with money resources and not to believe any ad.
