USA and China Just Struck a Quiet but Critical Deal
In a significant development aimed at reducing trade tensions, the United States and China have reached a mutual understanding to streamline the flow of rare earth materials to the U.S., according to a White House source.
The move comes as part of ongoing efforts to cool down the long-standing economic standoff between the two global powers.
The breakthrough stems from discussions held in Geneva this past May, where Chinese representatives agreed to begin dismantling a range of non-tariff measures imposed on U.S. goods since April 2. While some aspects of the rollback remain vague, both sides appear to be progressing toward tangible steps.
Rare earth elements, which are vital for everything from electric vehicles to advanced military technologies, had been caught in the crossfire of the trade war. In response to earlier U.S. tariffs initiated under former President Donald Trump, Beijing had added these critical materials to its controlled export list, further intensifying geopolitical friction.
According to the White House official, a new framework has been outlined to implement the Geneva agreement, specifically focusing on accelerating rare earth exports to the United States.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, speaking to Bloomberg, suggested that once China follows through with its rare earth deliveries, the U.S. will reciprocate by lifting some of its countermeasures.
This step signals cautious optimism that the two countries are inching closer to a more cooperative trade environment—at least in sectors where mutual reliance remains unavoidable.
