US Reportedly Announces a Trade Deal With China

The United States has announced the successful conclusion of a new trade agreement with China following two days of intense negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the breakthrough and praised both parties for making “substantial progress” in resolving key trade issues.

“I’m happy to report that we made substantial progress between the United States and China in the very important trade talks,” Bessent said. He thanked the Swiss government for hosting the discussions, emphasizing the productivity of the negotiations, which involved the Chinese vice premier, two vice ministers, Ambassador Jamieson, and himself.

The Secretary added that a full briefing will be held tomorrow, but noted the discussions were highly productive and that President Trump had been briefed directly by both himself and Ambassador Jamieson.

U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer echoed the sentiment, calling the talks “very constructive” and expressing surprise at how quickly the two sides were able to bridge their differences.

“It’s important to understand how quickly we were able to come to agreement, which reflects that perhaps the differences were not so large as maybe thought,” said Greer. He also referenced the U.S.’s $1.2 trillion trade deficit, which had prompted the declaration of a national emergency and the imposition of tariffs.

Greer concluded optimistically, stating that the new trade deal would contribute significantly toward resolving the longstanding deficit and easing tensions between the two global powers.

More details on the terms of the agreement are expected in a formal briefing scheduled for tomorrow morning.
