U.S. Imposes Tariffs Up to 3,521% on Southeast Asian Solar Panels

The U.S. Commerce Department has proposed tariffs as high as 3,521% on solar panel imports from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, citing unfair subsidies and dumping practices tied to Chinese firms.
The investigation found that Chinese manufacturers were rerouting production through Southeast Asia to bypass existing U.S. tariffs. Companies like Trina Solar and Jinko Solar face duties of 375% and 41%, respectively.
The move, welcomed by U.S. solar manufacturers, follows President Donald Trump’s renewed push for trade enforcement and comes just days after Xi Jinping’s tour of Southeast Asia.
While the tariffs aim to protect U.S. production, they may raise costs for American businesses and consumers. A final decision from the U.S. International Trade Commission is expected in June.
