U.S.-China Ties “In a Good Place,” Says Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has praised President Donald Trump’s recent diplomatic success in Asia, describing Washington’s relationship with Beijing as stable and productive.
- Bessent praises Trump’s handling of U.S.–China relations.
- Trump’s Asia trip strengthens trade ties across the region.
- Bessent addresses tariff and technology policy outlook.
- Future Trump–Xi meetings expected to shape 2026 diplomacy.
His remarks follow Trump’s regional tour, which included high-profile meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and new trade agreements aimed at reinforcing economic cooperation.
Speaking to Fox News, Bessent emphasized that Trump’s leadership has been crucial in resetting ties with China. “Only President Trump could engage Xi on such equal footing,” he said, highlighting the “mutual respect” that defines their rapport. Bessent credited Trump for managing to negotiate trade and peace accords “in China’s own backyard,” something few American leaders have achieved.
Trump’s weeklong Asia tour spanned Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. In Malaysia, he attended the signing of the Cambodia–Thailand peace accord, while in Tokyo, talks with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi resulted in a $550 billion Japanese investment pledge to the U.S. In Seoul, Trump met with President Lee Jae Myung before holding a pivotal meeting with Xi, which the White House later confirmed led to a new trade agreement.
Bessent: Supreme Court Reversal on Tariffs Would Be “Unusual”
Addressing domestic concerns, Bessent also commented on ongoing speculation surrounding the legality of Trump’s tariff policies. In a separate statement, he noted it would be “unusual” for the Supreme Court to intervene or overturn tariffs imposed by the administration, underscoring the president’s broad authority over trade measures.

Beyond trade policy, Bessent hinted that the U.S. could eventually loosen restrictions on semiconductor exports to China, particularly involving Nvidia’s advanced Blackwell chips. He noted that while these chips are currently seen as the “crown jewel” of U.S. technology, rapid innovation could soon make them less sensitive, potentially allowing for controlled sales.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently expressed hope of eventually selling the company’s latest hardware to Chinese clients, though he confirmed that no such plans are active. Bessent’s comments align with a broader strategy of keeping negotiation channels open while maintaining technological leadership.
Trump and Xi Expected to Meet Again in 2026
Looking ahead, Bessent said both leaders are expected to hold two state visits in 2026 — one in Beijing and one in Washington — with additional encounters planned at major international summits. Trump is scheduled to host the G20 meeting at his Doral resort in Florida next December, followed by an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, later in the year.

Bessent described the trajectory of the U.S.–China relationship as “balanced and constructive,” saying Trump’s recent diplomacy has restored a sense of predictability in global trade. “We’re in a good place,” he told reporters, suggesting that both nations are now entering a phase of managed competition rather than confrontation.
