U.S. and India Finalize Trade Deal Framework, JD Vance Confirms

In a major diplomatic development amid rising global trade tensions, U.S. Vice-President JD Vance announced on Tuesday that the United States and India have officially finalized the terms of reference for a comprehensive trade deal.

Speaking at an event in Jaipur, a day after meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vance described the agreement as a key milestone toward building a “balanced, stable, and fair” global trade system.

“Our administration seeks trade partners on the basis of fairness and shared national interests,” Vance stated. “We want partners who respect labor, value their workers, and share our vision for sustainable prosperity.”

A Vision for a New Global Trade Order

Vance underscored the strategic intent behind the deal, explaining that the U.S. is not looking for passive trade channels but active partnerships with like-minded economies.

“We want to work with countries that are committed to building things with America,” he said. “This is about shaping a new, fairer global trade architecture.”

He emphasized that while the U.S. does not expect identical economic systems from its allies, it does expect alignment on core principles—including job creation, supply chain resilience, and national security cooperation.

Strengthening U.S.-India Ties

The finalized terms come after a February announcement by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi, setting an ambitious goal to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

“Both of our governments are working hard on a trade agreement based on shared priorities,” Vance said. “Yesterday, Prime Minister Modi and I made significant progress on all of these points.”
He added that formalizing the terms of reference provides a roadmap for the final negotiation phase, bringing both nations closer to a landmark economic agreement.

Economic and Strategic Alignment

Beyond economics, Vance emphasized the growing strategic alignment between the U.S. and India.

“In India, America has a friend,” he declared. “We are committed to deepening the warm bonds our great nations already share.”
The trade framework announcement comes amid broader global uncertainty, particularly over President Trump’s proposed reciprocal tariffs, which have caused unease in international markets. The U.S.-India progress could signal a constructive alternative path—one built on cooperation, rather than confrontation.
