U.S. and China Reopen Diplomatic Channels, Eye Trade Progress
The United States and China agreed to maintain open communication following a diplomatic call on Thursday between top officials.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu discussed a broad range of issues, signaling renewed high-level contact between the two global powers.
Both nations released similar statements Friday, confirming the dialogue but avoiding specifics—especially around tariffs.
Dialogue Seen as a Positive Step, Not a Breakthrough
While the conversation didn’t mark a breakthrough, analysts say the exchange is promising. “At least China now knows who to talk to on the U.S. side,” said Dan Wang of Eurasia Group. He credited the Geneva discussions earlier this month with establishing a reliable communication channel.
That meeting led to a joint decision to temporarily reduce most tariffs—a rare move that suggests room for cooperation. The last such joint statement came in November 2023 and focused solely on climate change.
Diplomatic Engagement Expands in Trump’s Second Term
The call between Ma and Landau marks the second high-level U.S.-China contact since President Donald Trump returned to office. In January, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Experts believe this renewed dialogue could lead to more cooperation, including potential talks on halting the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. “Both sides are reestablishing ties at the diplomatic level,” said Xinbo Wu of Fudan University.
