Trump Urges U.S. to Cut Off Elon Musk’s Billions in Federal Deals

U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly called for an end to government subsidies and contracts awarded to Elon Musk, suggesting such a move could save the country "Billions and Billions of Dollars."
The statement, posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform, marks a new escalation in the ongoing tensions between the two high-profile figures.
In the post, Trump wrote:
“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”
Trump did not specify which contracts or subsidies he was referring to, but Musk’s companies — including SpaceX, Tesla, and the defense tech firm X (formerly Twitter) — have received various forms of government support over the years. These range from NASA launch contracts and energy tax credits to infrastructure grants and defense partnerships.
The remarks come amid a shifting political landscape in which both Trump and Musk wield significant influence. While Musk has previously expressed support for some of Trump’s policies, the relationship between the two billionaires has grown more strained in recent months.
Musk has yet to respond to Trump’s latest criticism. However, political analysts say the statement may signal a broader theme in Trump’s 2024 campaign: cutting spending by targeting what he frames as politically favored tech giants.
Whether the Biden administration will respond to the suggestion remains unclear, but Musk’s ventures remain deeply embedded in several federal programs — including the Pentagon’s space initiatives and clean energy goals. Any abrupt policy shift could ripple through sectors ranging from aerospace to electric vehicles.
