Trump Blasts Powell Over Interest Rates, Says That ‘His Term Ends Shortly’
President Donald J. Trump has renewed his public criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, accusing him of failing to act in the country’s best interest by not slashing interest rates.
In a strongly worded statement, Trump argued that lowering rates to 1–2% could save the United States as much as $1 trillion per year in interest costs.
Trump referred to Powell as a “numbskull” and “dumb guy” who should never have been appointed—adding that Powell is a “Trump hater” and criticizing President Biden for reappointing him. Despite acknowledging that his own strong criticism may have complicated Powell’s decisions, Trump insisted he had tried multiple approaches, including being “nice,” “neutral,” and even “nasty.”
Inflation Claims and Economic Outlook
Trump declared that the U.S. currently has “virtually no inflation” and that the economy is thriving. He pointed to increased tariff income and a surge in factory construction as signs of economic strength, claiming conditions are better than ever before.
He dismissed concerns about future inflation, urging Powell to lower rates now and raise them only if necessary later. “Don’t say that you think there will be Inflation sometime in the future… because there isn’t now,” Trump stated.
Political Undercurrent
Trump’s comments also reflected deep frustration with what he called the “Biden Fake Government” and hinted at his dissatisfaction with the Federal Reserve Board’s lack of intervention, saying, “Maybe, just maybe, I’ll have to change my mind about firing him!”
He concluded by referencing Powell’s tenure, suggesting that “his term ends shortly” leaving open questions about leadership changes should Trump return to office.
