S&P 500 Enters the Blockchain Era Through Centrifuge Integration

In a move that could redefine how global investors access traditional markets, the S&P 500 Index is making its blockchain debut.

The development comes through a collaboration between decentralized finance platform Centrifuge and S&P Dow Jones Indices, which together are launching a tokenized version of the index.

This blockchain-native fund will allow for onchain exposure to the S&P 500 via smart contracts — marking the first time the benchmark index becomes accessible directly through decentralized infrastructure. Asset managers licensed by S&P DJI will be able to build tokenized funds that reflect institutional-grade standards while leveraging programmable finance features.

Anemoy Capital is leading the charge, preparing to launch a smart contract-powered version of the S&P 500 under the Janus Henderson brand. Previous products built by Anemoy and Centrifuge reportedly reached $1 billion in assets faster than any prior tokenized fund.

Beyond simple access, this initiative aims to provide investors with more control over how they manage exposure — enabling uses like collateralization, automated strategies, and 24/7 global trading. Centrifuge’s new “proof-of-index” infrastructure, which ensures transparent and real-time index tracking, will power the fund.

However, experts say tokenization alone isn’t enough. For digital versions of traditional assets to succeed, they must offer real utility and liquidity. “If all you’ve done is replicate what exists with extra steps, there’s no value,” said Keyrock CEO Kevin de Patoul, underscoring the need for market functionality.

The tokenized index will officially debut at Centrifuge’s upcoming real-world asset summit in Cannes.
