SEC Delays Decision on Spot Altcoin ETFs from Bitwise, VanEck, and Grayscale

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has once again postponed decisions on several proposed spot altcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), continuing a pattern of regulatory caution under the agency’s new leadership.
In filings published Thursday, the SEC delayed its responses on the Bitwise Dogecoin ETF, the Grayscale Hedera Trust, and the VanEck Avalanche ETF. The move reflects the Commission’s ongoing review process and does not indicate any final stance.
“Institution of proceedings does not indicate that the Commission has reached any conclusions with respect to any of the issues involved,” the agency wrote in each filing. “Rather, the Commission seeks and encourages interested persons to provide comments on the proposed rule change.”
Pattern of Delays Amid Signs of Progress
The latest round of delays comes just two days after the SEC reportedly asked issuers of proposed spot Solana ETFs to update their S-1 filings—a request often viewed as a step toward approval. Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas has suggested that a final decision on those funds could come within two to four months.
While the SEC has made progress with spot Bitcoin ETFs earlier this year, its approach toward altcoin-based ETFs has remained cautious. Industry observers note that such delays have become routine as the agency evaluates potential market manipulation risks, liquidity profiles, and investor protection measures specific to non-Bitcoin digital assets.
Industry Watches for Key Milestones
Despite the delays, ETF issuers and crypto advocates continue to push for broader product offerings, arguing that regulated access to altcoins through ETFs would benefit both institutional and retail investors. The SEC’s willingness to engage in public comment and request updates signals that the door to approval remains open, albeit on a longer timeline.
With attention now shifting to the outcome of the Solana ETF filings, the crypto market awaits signs of regulatory clarity that could further legitimize altcoin exposure through traditional investment vehicles.
