Putin Proposes Ceasefire Along Ukraine Front Line in Talks with Trump Envoy
Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed halting military operations in Ukraine along the existing front line, according to a report by the Financial Times on Tuesday.
The development is seen as a potential step toward a broader peace agreement with U.S. President Donald Trump, amid ongoing backchannel diplomacy.
Citing three sources familiar with the matter, the FT reports that Putin made the offer during a meeting in St. Petersburg earlier this month with Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy. The proposal would see Russia effectively freezing the conflict at its current territorial boundaries, while dropping its claims to areas in four Ukrainian regions that remain under Kyiv’s control.
A New Phase in U.S.-Russia Diplomacy?
The report comes at a time of escalating geopolitical uncertainty and shifting alliances. While neither Washington nor Moscow has publicly confirmed the meeting or the offer, the move is being interpreted as a sign that Putin may be seeking to lock in territorial gains while potentially easing international sanctions pressure through negotiation.
If confirmed, the proposal would mark one of the most significant overtures toward a ceasefire since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. It also suggests that Trump’s administration is actively exploring diplomatic channels — a sharp contrast from the more military-focused posture of previous U.S. efforts.
