The team at Pundi X recently showcased their blockchain-powered phone at the ongoing xBlockchain Summit at the Inaya Putri Bali, which kicked off yesterday. It is the world’s first blockchain-enabled Android smartphone. Named XPhone, the phone is not tied to any particular carrier network.

Blockchain technology is disrupting a big number of different sectors across the world. From banking, real estate, healthcare, education to politics, blockchain today affects just about every facet of our lives. And it now looks like communication could be the most recent industry to benefit from the blockchain technology revolution. The team at Pundi X, a leading global developer of blockchain-powered devices, already has their offering set to hit shelves in the next several months.

Pundi X has already worked on blockchain-powered (PoS) devices that use digital currencies as a form of payment. But they aren’t stopping there. The company announced via Medium that they are getting ready to release a blockchain-based smartphone called XPhone. According to the post, the phone will not need a mobile carrier as it runs on its own Function X blockchain platform. The technology will attempt to transform the way people use mobile devices to communicate and exchange digital information – a sign of advancing toward a decentralized world.

Function X is a completely decentralized solution that comprises five main components:

  1. Operating System (OS)
  2. Function X blockchain
  3. Function X IPFX
  4. FXTP protocol
  5. Docker

Android 9

The phone will be launched with Android 9.0 pie. This makes it possible to install and manage android apps on the device. With this blockchain-based smartphone, the team at Pundi X hopes users and developers will be able to switch seamlessly between android and Function X platform.

Release date

The phone is currently being tested by a number of smartphone manufacturers. The device will be released in the 2nd quarter of 2019, according to the post. The company has created the Function X website to communicate about the progress. The detailed information of the device will be available here.
