Police Foil $8M Crypto Kidnapping in France
French authorities successfully rescued the father of a crypto business owner during a police operation in Paris on May 3.
The man had been held for several days as kidnappers demanded millions in ransom, according to reports from French media outlets. Law enforcement arrested five suspects in connection to the incident.
While the identities of those involved remain undisclosed for safety reasons, it’s understood that the father and his son are involved in a cryptocurrency marketing company based in Malta. This event comes just months after the high-profile abduction of Ledger co-founder David Balland, who was also targeted for a crypto ransom before being rescued by French police.
The Paris kidnapping is part of a disturbing trend of criminals targeting people in the crypto industry. In recent years, several such incidents have been reported globally, as attackers attempt to extort digital assets from those perceived to have significant holdings.
Notably, in late 2024, WonderFi CEO Dean Skurka was kidnapped in Toronto and forced to pay $1 million in crypto to secure his freedom. Similarly, in Chicago, six individuals were arrested for holding a family and their nanny hostage, demanding $15 million in cryptocurrency after luring the victims through a garage door deception.
Even well-known online personalities have become targets. In March 2025, streamer Amouranth faced a terrifying ordeal when armed intruders invaded her Texas home, demanding access to her digital assets. Four suspects were later taken into custody.
The rise of such crimes underscores the growing need for stronger personal security within the crypto space.
