Norway to Impose Temporary Ban on New Crypto Mining Centers

Norway is preparing to introduce a temporary ban on the development of new data centers tied to cryptocurrency mining, according to a June 20 report from Reuters.

The measure, expected to take effect before the end of 2025, is driven by growing environmental and energy concerns.

The Norwegian government explained that the goal is to conserve electricity for more productive sectors. Authorities argue that crypto mining provides limited economic value while consuming large amounts of power.

Karianne Tung, Norway’s Minister for Digitalization and Public Administration, emphasized the administration’s intention to reduce crypto mining activities as much as possible. She noted that such operations offer minimal tax revenue and job creation, undermining their overall economic contribution.

This policy shift places Norway at odds with a rising number of countries embracing crypto mining as a way to utilize surplus energy and enhance national income. As the global energy debate surrounding digital assets intensifies, Norway’s position signals a clear preference for prioritizing sustainability over short-term technological trends.
