MoonPay Secures BitLicense, Grants MoonPay Full Access to Offer in All 50 U.S. States

MoonPay has announced a major regulatory milestone: the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) has officially granted the firm both its BitLicense and Money Transmitter Licenses, enabling MoonPay to offer its full suite of crypto services directly to residents of New York—a state known for its rigorous crypto compliance standards.

This final approval completes what the company calls the “golden stack” of U.S. crypto licenses, empowering MoonPay to operate seamlessly across all 50 U.S. states.

BitLicense: The Crypto Industry’s Gold Standard

The BitLicense, introduced by NYDFS, is widely regarded as one of the most demanding regulatory frameworks for virtual currency companies. With this license now in hand, MoonPay joins an elite group of crypto firms permitted to engage in virtual currency business in New York.

“With the approval of our New York BitLicense and Money Transmitter Licenses, MoonPay now holds the golden regulatory stack for crypto in the U.S.,” said Ivan Soto-Wright, MoonPay’s co-founder and CEO. “We’re immensely proud of this milestone.”

Full-Stack Services Now Available in New York

With this regulatory clearance, New Yorkers can now access MoonPay’s fiat-to-crypto platform, including services for buying, selling, and storing crypto, using major payment methods or their MoonPay Balance.

This move solidifies MoonPay’s role as a leading provider of crypto payment solutions nationwide, removing all regulatory barriers to operation from coast to coast.

Global Compliance Footprint Expands

Beyond the U.S., MoonPay holds money transmission licenses in 46 U.S. jurisdictions and maintains active registrations in Canada, the UK, Australia, Italy, Ireland, and Jersey. In December 2024, the firm became one of the first crypto companies to secure a MiCA license under the EU’s new Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.

MoonPay’s expansion comes at a time when global crypto regulation is tightening—and the company appears to be embracing that challenge head-on.
