JPMorgan Warns of Stagflation Risks, Supports Fed’s Cautious Rate Strategy

JPMorgan Chase & Co. CEO Jamie Dimon has expressed growing concern that the United States could be heading toward stagflation, a troubling mix of rising inflation and slowing growth.

In recent remarks, Dimon emphasized that this is not a time for economic complacency, highlighting the convergence of mounting federal deficits, geopolitical tensions, and uncertain fiscal policies—notably, tariffs introduced under President Donald Trump.

Dimon rejected the idea that the U.S. economy currently sits in a “sweet spot,” instead cautioning that storm clouds may be forming. He said the Federal Reserve is taking the right approach by holding interest rates steady and waiting to assess further economic data before making any policy shifts.

The Federal Reserve, which has left interest rates unchanged through 2025 so far, has warned of an increasing risk of simultaneous inflation and unemployment—an economic environment reminiscent of the 1970s stagflation era. The central bank cited tariff impacts, policy uncertainty, and a resilient yet fragile economy as reasons for its caution.

Dimon noted that such a stagflation scenario could not be ruled out, particularly given the structural pressures facing the economy. He warned that prolonged fiscal mismanagement and trade-related disruptions could undermine U.S. growth prospects and intensify inflationary forces.

Troy Rohrbaugh, co-CEO of JPMorgan’s commercial and investment banking arm, also acknowledged the potential impact of these macro risks, stating that the bank’s investment banking revenue could decline as a result.

The statements from JPMorgan leadership underscore Wall Street’s increasing concern about an unpredictable and complex economic outlook, reinforcing the Fed’s hesitance to shift policy too quickly in a potentially volatile environment.
