House Republicans Pass Trump’s “Big, Beautiful” Tax Bill in Narrow Vote

In a significant legislative win for GOP leadership and former President Donald Trump, House Republicans passed a sweeping new tax reform bill early Thursday, pushing it through on a narrow vote after intense intra-party negotiations.

The more than 1,000-page bill, accompanied by 42 pages of amendments, was passed without a single Democratic vote. Reps. Warren Davidson (R-OH) and Thomas Massie (R-KY) broke ranks to oppose the bill, while Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), a member of the House Freedom Caucus, voted “present.”

“To our friends in the Senate, I would just say, the president is waiting with his pen,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, celebrating the passage and targeting July 4 as the date to deliver the bill to Trump’s desk.
The bill includes major permanent tax cuts, the elimination of taxes on tips, and a significant restructuring of the social safety net, including accelerated work requirements for Medicaid beneficiaries, now set to take effect by end of 2026—a win for conservative lawmakers.

To win over moderates, amendments included a fourfold increase in the SALT deduction cap, raising it from $10,000 to $40,000 for taxpayers earning under $500,000.

The legislation now heads to the Senate, where it faces hurdles despite being considered under budget reconciliation rules, allowing passage with a simple majority. Several Republican senators have already signaled that substantial revisions will be needed before they lend their support.
