Goldman Sachs Reports Strong Q1 2025 Earnings, Beating Estimates

April 14, 2025 — Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) has reported a strong start to the year, exceeding Wall Street expectations in its first-quarter earnings.

The firm posted net revenues of $15.06 billion and net earnings of $4.74 billion, translating to diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $14.12. This marks a significant increase from the $11.58 EPS reported in the same quarter last year and surpasses the $11.95 EPS from the previous quarter.

The annualized return on average common shareholders’ equity (ROE) stood at 16.9%, while the return on average tangible common shareholders’ equity (ROTE) reached 18.0%.

Key Business Highlights:

  • Global Banking & Markets: This division generated net revenues of $10.71 billion, a 10% increase year-over-year and a 26% rise from the previous quarter. The growth was driven by record performances in Equities and strong results in Fixed Income, Currency, and Commodities (FICC), particularly in financing and debt underwriting activities.
  • Asset & Wealth Management: Net revenues for this segment were $3.68 billion. Assets under supervision increased by $36 billion during the quarter, reaching a record $3.17 trillion.
  • Investment Banking: While investment banking fees totaled $1.91 billion, this represented an 8% decline compared to the first quarter of 2024. The decrease was primarily due to lower advisory revenues, though debt underwriting showed strength, driven by asset-backed and investment-grade activity.

CEO David Solomon commented on the results, stating, “Our strong results this quarter have demonstrated that in times of great uncertainty, clients turn to Goldman Sachs for execution and insight.”

Goldman Sachs’ performance in the UK market was particularly noteworthy. The firm secured the top position in UK investment banking revenue rankings for the first quarter, generating $163 million and rising four places from the same period in 2024. This strong performance was largely driven by its mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity, where it earned €116 million and captured a 20% market share.

With these results, Goldman Sachs continues to demonstrate resilience and adaptability in a dynamic financial landscape, reinforcing its position as a leading global financial institution.
