Gold Rally Nears $4,000 as Investors Seek Safety

Gold’s blistering climb in 2025 has become impossible to ignore. With prices pressing against the $4,000 level, the metal is set for its best year in nearly half a century.

To some, the rally looks like an investor vote of no confidence in the durability of the U.S. economic model.

Bloomberg Intelligence strategist Mike McGlone argues that the move says more about anxiety than optimism. While stocks have delivered solid double-digit gains this year, the scale of gold’s advance hints at underlying doubts.

Volatility across equities collapsed to record lows in September, but McGlone warns that a rebound in 2026 could make the gold surge appear prescient rather than overblown.

The performance gap across commodities reinforces the picture. Silver has soared past $45 on robust demand from solar, EV, and electronics production, but industrial metals like copper and aluminum have stumbled.

That divergence suggests investors are flocking to hedges and safe havens while the foundations of the real economy show signs of strain.

Banks and analysts are recalibrating forecasts accordingly. JPMorgan expects gold to average $3,675 an ounce through year-end, while acknowledging that renewed dollar weakness and higher volatility could push it to $4,000. Silver, meanwhile, is projected to hover in the $40–$50 range, with room to run higher if green-energy adoption accelerates.

The rally has been supported by relentless central-bank buying and steady inflows from investors hedging against policy shifts and economic uncertainty. For now, the message is clear: in a year where growth narratives dominate headlines, the world’s oldest store of value is being priced as a shield, not a celebration.
