Gold Boom Sends U.S. Reserves Past $1 Trillion as Conspiracies Grow

The world’s largest gold stockpile is back in the headlines - not just because bullion has surged to record highs, but because two of America’s most influential figures are questioning whether the vaults actually contain what Washington claims.

In February, President Donald Trump and Elon Musk both raised doubts about the reserves, with Trump vowing to personally inspect Fort Knox: “If the gold isn’t there, we’re going to be very upset.”

While conspiracy chatter swirls, the numbers are staggering. The United States holds 261.5 million ounces of gold across Fort Knox, West Point, Denver, and the Federal Reserve’s Manhattan vault. At current market prices above $3,824 per ounce, that hoard is worth more than $1 trillion — yet official government books still list it at just $11 billion.

That gap comes from a relic of 1973, when Congress fixed the accounting price at $42.22 per ounce. The mismatch has widened dramatically in 2025, with bullion climbing 45% so far this year amid trade tensions, global instability, and renewed Fed rate cuts that pushed investors into safe havens.

Speculation about revaluation refuses to die down. Earlier this year, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent briefly suggested that updating the gold to market value could unleash hundreds of billions of dollars in fiscal room. Analysts were quick to imagine nearly $1 trillion flowing into Treasury coffers. But Bessent soon backtracked, and Bloomberg reported no serious policy effort is underway.

Other nations have modernized their balance sheets — Germany, Italy, and South Africa have all revalued their gold in recent decades. The United States, by contrast, continues to keep its reserves trapped in a 1970s time capsule.

For now, Washington faces a dilemma: keep ignoring a trillion-dollar resource or risk destabilizing the Fed’s balance sheet by tapping it. Either way, with gold vaulting to new highs and Fort Knox back in the spotlight, the question of America’s bullion is no longer a dusty relic — it’s a live debate with trillion-dollar stakes.
