Europe Warns Iran: Restart Nuclear Talks or Face UN Sanctions

Tensions are rising again over Iran’s nuclear program. France, Germany, and the UK have issued a blunt ultimatum to Tehran: resume negotiations by the end of August or face the return of United Nations sanctions.

The warning comes after the first direct communication between the E3 and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi since last month’s U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. This time, European patience is wearing thin.

According to a French diplomatic source, the E3 made clear that a verifiable agreement must be reached urgently. Without progress, they’ll activate the snapback mechanism—reimposing sanctions within 30 days.

Araghchi, however, rejected the pressure, accusing the U.S. of abandoning diplomacy first and calling the Europeans’ threats “morally and legally baseless.” He reiterated Iran’s willingness to negotiate, but only under fair and equal terms.

Though the 2015 nuclear deal remains technically in force, the absence of IAEA inspectors inside Iran and the lack of scheduled talks with the U.S. leaves little hope. Western diplomats admit an August breakthrough is unlikely. Still, efforts are underway to align strategies with Washington in a final push to avoid escalation.
