China Exempts Key U.S. Goods From Tariffs as Trade Talks Resume

China has begun exempting select U.S. imports from its steep 125% tariffs and is quietly asking domestic firms to identify essential goods they want spared from levies, according to business sources familiar with the matter.

This move is seen as the clearest sign yet that Beijing is looking to dial back trade tensions and soften the blow of the ongoing tariff war.

The development comes on the heels of recent conciliatory signals from Washington, suggesting that both nations may be ready to re-engage after a prolonged freeze in negotiations that rattled global markets and raised recession fears.

Markets React as Beijing Softens Trade Stance

The exemptions, though not yet officially announced by Chinese authorities, have already lifted investor sentiment. The U.S. dollar edged up and equity markets in Hong Kong and Japan saw modest gains following the news.

Business groups believe that the exemption process could eventually include dozens of industries. “As a quid-pro-quo move, it could provide a potential way to de-escalate tensions,” said Alfredo Montufar-Helu, senior adviser at the Conference Board’s China Center. However, he cautioned that neither country wants to be seen as making the first major concession.
