Bessent: U.S. Has Not Started Tariff Talks With China

Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, told lawmakers that no negotiations with China have taken place regarding new tariffs—despite President Trump’s recent statements suggesting otherwise.

Speaking at House Appropriations subcommittee, Bessent confirmed that the U.S. is currently in talks with 17 global trade partners. However, he made it clear that China is not one of them.

“China, we have not engaged in negotiations with as of yet,” Bessent stated during his testimony.

Conflicting Messages on Trade Talks

Bessent’s remarks sharply conflict with President Trump’s public claims. The president recently told reporters that talks with Chinese leaders were already underway to resolve rising tariff tensions.

This contradiction adds confusion to an already tense trade landscape, especially as global markets react to shifting policies and rhetoric from Washington.

Tariff negotiations remain a critical issue as businesses brace for potential economic fallout. The absence of dialogue with China, the U.S.’s largest trading partner, raises concerns about prolonged uncertainty and rising costs for both nations.
